![]() What I like most about it is the small size (12.1" screen) and the fact it weighs 2½ pounds - about the same as a 11.6" ChromeBook. (I've still got a Latitude D400 from 2003 that runs - not worth much on a modern web browser, however.) I picked this up at Shop Goodwill for $17 plus postage and it came with a 128 GB SSD and a lighted keyboard. I'm typing this on a 2009 Dell Latitude E4200 running Linux Mint 20.1 - and this is my newest computer. However, PCs are cheaper, but if they only last half as long is it worth it?I think it depends on whether you get business PCs or home ones. It's not as good as it was back in the Steve Jobs days - but the fact that my kids are using 2 white macbooks made when Steve Jobs was still alive shows that they are generally made better and have a much longer shelf life than any PC. I used to be PC only guy, then I tried my girlfriend - now wife's 1400c laptop for college and bought the same one - never looked back. Maybe we should start a thread in One-on-One on sharing tips on raising kids to be fiscally responsible. She immediately got it, "Oh, I mean I'm going to save up to buy a PC myself." Subtext: WTF? Even with the student discount it cost us a grand! Two sets of parent eyes went wide in silence. I don't feel any remorse about this.Ĭoincidentally, hours after I posted the above, the kid came home from her part-time job and said she's so frustrated with her 7-month old MacBook Pro laptop, she wants to get a desktop PC. Others buy drugs and alcohol, I buy electronics. They were 200 bucks each and pretty much we spend our money on computers, iPads, iPhones and TVs. Our school system uses Google Chromebooks and I bought those just in case - and we haven't used them yet. ![]() Either your computer isn't updated or the school's isn't and it's a clusterF. Honestly, it's usually just something very stupid like literally the new Mac is ahead of the older school system and they aren't talking to each other well. But I like to just blame the real criminals - the teachers! Android blame your mom for not getting you an iPhone. The truth is things just don't work sometimes and if you're a PC person you blame Apple. However, PCs are cheaper, but if they only last half as long is it worth it? ![]() So - HA - she has to pull up her school site on MY warhorse machine and submit her work that way. Several people at the school have tried to figure out the glitch - other freshman were having problems with their brand new Macs, too. However - for some reason the Mac laptop isn't playing nice with her school's platform when it comes to uploading her classwork or even attaching it to an email that must be sent through the school's email system (it looks like a version of Outlook). Xmas rolls around, and now she's campaigning for an iPhone to replace her Android. My guy caved and he threw in a pricey pair of Mac AirPods (he's a pushover when it comes to the kid). She campaigned for the latest Mac Air laptop and pleaded her case that, with COVID pushing her freshman year in college online, only a Mac would do. When she graduated HS last June, one of her gifts was a new laptop. however, I have an 18 year old and it's a status symbol in her circles. On principle - I won't even use an i-Phone (an ethics thing). I've rebelled against Mac/Apple for years - mostly because my brother used to ridicule me for not making the switch. He builds and rebuilds PCs and laptops on the side. I'm on a Windows 10 PC built about 5 years ago by the tech guy who works with my guy's company.
